About the Artist
Award winning W. J. Cunningham’s roots began in Indiana where he received a Bachelor of Art Education from the John Herron School of Art and a Master of Science degree with an emphasis on Education and Fine Art from Butler University. He spent five years teaching in Indianapolis before continuing his education to pursue his career in dance and theater.
After several years of entertaining audiences in the field of theater, Cunningham moved to North Carolina where he played a role in the creation of a Community Arts Council and directed Polk County’s first Arts Festival.
Through the years, Cunningham’s style has developed by working in various media. Using oil, he applies paint thinly as in watercolor, working from light to dark rather than the traditional dark to light.
Cunningham has recently finished promotional design work for the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. His illustration appears in the book “Nashville – An American Self Portrait”. Under One Roof of San Francisco, California, also selected his work to be used in their annual Christmas card campaign.
Cunningham now resides in Nashville, TN. He recently completed a commission for BMI Nashville where ten of his oils can now be seen. He is currently showing in galleries in New York, NY, Nashville, TN, Birmingham, AL, Jacksonville, FL, Memphis, TN and Tubac, AZ.
